Last year, inspired by the late and very great Mark Shand, Quintessentially Foundation and Elephant Family partnered to present their boldest, most eccentric adventure to date: an auto rickshaw race across central India to Tara, Mark’s elephant and star of his bestselling book, 'Travels on my Elephant'.
Between the 1st to 8th November, ‘Travels to my Elephant’ saw 45 beautifully designed rickshaws race 500km across India from the temples at Khajuraho and concluding at Kipling Camp, where the teams met and spent time with Elephant Family's late founder Mark Shand's elephant, Tara. Racers included actor Waris Ahluwalia, models Yasmin and Amber Le Bon, food expert Natasha Corrett, and Mark Shand's nephews, Chairman of Quintessentially Foundation Ben Elliot and esteemed food writer, Tom Parker Bowles.
The race was part of a yearlong calendar of events, in which we have raised over £2 million for Mark's charity, Elephant Family, and the Asian elephant he cared so deeply for. Now that Mark has passed, we are more determined than ever that the projects he was so passionate about, remained funded.
Earlier in the year, Quintessentially Foundation and Elephant Family hosted a one off event at Clarence House in the presence of HRH Prince of Wales and HRH Duchess of Cornwall. Sotheby's auctioned off 20 specially designed rickshaws and the Auction alone raised £750,000! Guests included HRH Princess Eugenie of York, Hilary and Galen Weston, Alice Temperley, Bianca Jagger, Natalie Imbruglia and Ashley Roberts.
